On this day...
In 1924, In a friendly match between Uruguay, who had recently been crowned Olympic football champions in Paris, and regional rivals Argentina, the Albiceleste left winger Cesareo Onzari scores the winner directly from a corner kick. In spite of fervent protests from the Uruguayans, the referee rightly lets the goal stand. The Argentinians rather cheekily christened it the "Olympic goal", and, though very much a rarity, the name is still used today on the odd occasions it happens.
