In 2003, Chelsea chairman Ken Bates agreed to sell the club to Russian oil magnate Roman Abramovich in a sensational takeover deal. Abramovich, 36, controls more than 80 percent of Sibneft, 50 percent of Russian aluminum monopoly Rusal and 26 percent of Russia's national airline Aeroflot. He is the second richest man in Russia.
