In 1987, The President of the Confederation of African Football (1971-87), Ethiopia's Ydnekatchew Tessema, dies in Addis Ababa after a long battle with cancer. He was a player, coach, lecturer and above all of a champion of African football, a cause for which he dedicated his entire working life. He played 15 times for the national side before later becoming manager and bringing his own style of football to the team. As coach he guided Ethiopia to the African Cup of Nations title in 1962. He also helped found the Ethiopian Sports Office, the forerunner to today's Ethiopian Football Federation.
