In 2008, Turkey qualified for the European Championship semi-finals for the first time in their history thanks to a victory on penalties against a technically gifted Croatia in Vienna's Ernst Happel Stadion after both teams scored late in extra-time. Ivan Klasnic thought he had scored the winner for Croatia with one minute to go in extra-time, but Semih Senturk levelled the score in injury time in an unbelievable finish. Veteran Rustu Recber, who replaced the suspended Volkan Demirel, was the hero when he saved the decisive penalty.
