In 1950, Sevilla and Murcia meet on the opening day of the Spanish season at the Estadio Nervión. Comfortably leading by 5-0, the Andalucians' celebrations were cut short when tragedy struck the stadium. All afternoon a ferocious storm had been battering the city and as well as felling trees and streetlights, the high winds also toppled the stadium's giant scoreboard with the club scorekeeper Fernando Villapol inside. The accident, 15 minutes before full-time resulted in the death of Villapol and saw the match abandoned. As frightened spectators fled the ground another six people were injured, one fatally. In the days that followed, the club organised a collection to raise money for the widow and six children of their deceased employee.
