In 1942, Ukrainian side Start play the German team Flakelf in a highly charged game in Kiev. The German forces, who had occupied the city the year before, had decided to organise a football league to entertain their troops there. The Ukrainians began to dominate the competition, humiliating the German side 5-1 in their first meeting. n the day the sides met again, there was more than a simple game of football at stake. The Ukrainians won (5-3) and barely a week later the Gestapo lifted the entire team and sent them to concentration camps where they were later tortured and killed. The Start players became martyrs and to this day remain heroes in the city of Kiev.
